Wi-Fi 5 GHz vs 2.4 GHz

Most modern routers offer 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. The 2.4 GHz band reaches farther but is often crowded and slower. The 5 GHz band is faster at short and medium distance but loses strength more quickly through walls.

Range and capacity trade places

Choosing the right band can improve speed without changing your internet plan. Devices near the router usually perform better on 5 GHz. Devices far away may stay connected more reliably on 2.4 GHz.

Compare both Wi-Fi bands from the same locations. The 5 GHz band often wins at short range, while 2.4 GHz may hold a connection farther away; the better choice is the band that stays stable where the device is used.

Choose the band by location

  • Run a SpeedFiber test on 2.4 GHz, then repeat on 5 GHz.
  • Check the result from the same location for a fair comparison.
  • Look for devices that only support 2.4 GHz.
  • Notice whether speed or stability matters more in that room.
Testing note: 5 GHz is not automatically better everywhere. Use it where signal remains strong; use 2.4 GHz for reach or low-bandwidth devices when necessary.

Use band steering intentionally

  • Use 5 GHz for laptops, phones and TVs near the router.
  • Use 2.4 GHz for smart-home devices or long-distance coverage.
  • Separate network names if automatic band steering chooses poorly.
  • Add mesh coverage if neither band performs well in distant rooms.

Test both bands on the same device and location. Repeat near the router and in a distant room. A fast 5 GHz result nearby and unstable result far away is normal signal behavior, not necessarily a fault.

When another access point is better

The provider is usually not responsible when the wired service is healthy and only one band or room is weak. Seek router support if a band disappears, disconnects near the router or cannot use clean channels despite current firmware.

Example: near room and far room

A phone beside the router reaches high speed on 5 GHz. In a distant bedroom behind several walls, the same band becomes unstable while 2.4 GHz remains slower but usable.

A properly placed mesh node brings strong 5 GHz closer to the bedroom. Until then, choosing 2.4 GHz gives a more reliable connection than chasing the higher peak.

Band-selection mistakes

  • Forcing distant devices onto 5 GHz because its name sounds faster.
  • Leaving old 2.4 GHz devices on a channel width that creates unnecessary interference.
  • Comparing bands while the device roams between different access points.
  • Assuming a single combined SSID guarantees perfect band steering on every client.
