Why is my internet slow?

Slow internet is usually caused by a chain of small issues rather than one single fault. A weak Wi-Fi signal, overloaded router, background downloads, congested service-provider network or old device can all make a fast plan feel slow. The best approach is to measure the connection, change one thing, and test again.

Translate the symptom into a metric

If download is low, pages and videos take longer to load. If upload is low, cloud backup and video calls suffer. If ping or jitter is high, games and calls may feel delayed even when download speed looks acceptable.

Start with all four measurements and then isolate the connection path. Strong Ethernet with weak Wi-Fi points inside the home, while weak Ethernet and Wi-Fi together suggest router, modem, provider or plan limitations.

Narrow the problem by scope

  • Test beside the router, then test again in the room where the problem happens.
  • Pause cloud backup, game downloads, system updates and streaming on other devices.
  • Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if your laptop or router supports it.
  • Restart the router once, then wait two minutes before testing again.
Testing note: First decide whether the issue affects one application, one device, one room or the whole connection. Each scope points to different causes.

Fix the layer that actually failed

  • Move the router to an open and central place, not inside a cabinet.
  • Use 5 GHz or Wi-Fi 6 when you are close to the router; use 2.4 GHz for longer range.
  • Replace old cables, splitters or routers that cannot handle your plan speed.
