What Is a Good Ping?

A good ping depends on what you are doing. Browsing can feel normal with moderate ping, but competitive gaming, voice calls and remote desktop need lower latency. Ping is measured in milliseconds, so smaller numbers are better.

Good ping depends on the task

Under 20 ms is excellent for real-time activity. Around 20 to 60 ms is good for most users. Higher values may still work for browsing but can feel delayed in calls and games. Very high or unstable ping often points to Wi-Fi interference, routing distance or congestion.

Judge ping in relation to the destination and application. A stable value to a nearby server may be excellent, while a distant game region naturally takes longer; sudden variation is often more disruptive than a consistent number.

Choose a meaningful destination

  • Run the ping test close to the router and again over Ethernet.
  • Compare the result at different times of day.
  • Check whether ping jumps when another device starts downloading.
  • Use the same test server when comparing results.
Testing note: Do not compare ping without naming the destination. Physical distance and routing make a nearby server fundamentally different from one across an ocean.

Reduce avoidable delay

  • Use Ethernet for latency-sensitive devices.
  • Stop heavy downloads during gaming or meetings.
  • Restart the router if latency suddenly becomes abnormal.
  • Ask the provider to check routing or line quality if Ethernet ping remains high.

Measure a nearby server by Ethernet to establish local access latency, then compare the actual game, call or work destination. Repeat during busy household use to reveal queueing that an idle result misses.

When latency is outside your network

Escalate when wired latency to multiple nearby destinations is consistently much higher than the established baseline or includes packet loss. High latency only to a distant service may require investigation by that service or its transit path.

Example: local server versus distant region

A user sees 12 ms to a local SpeedFiber server and 145 ms to a game region on another continent. Both measurements can be normal for their distances.

Selecting a closer game region reduces delay more effectively than changing DNS or buying additional download capacity.

Ping interpretation mistakes

  • Calling any value above a fixed threshold “bad” without considering distance and application.
  • Comparing Wi-Fi ping in one test with Ethernet in another.
  • Using average ping alone when spikes and packet loss cause the real problem.
  • Expecting a faster download package to shorten geographic distance.
