Best Router Placement Guide

Router placement can change your speed more than many people expect. Wi-Fi is radio, so walls, distance, furniture, appliances and floor layout all matter. A router hidden in a cabinet may look tidy but often creates weak coverage and unstable speed.

How position shapes radio coverage

Good placement improves download, upload, ping and jitter because devices spend less time correcting errors. Bad placement forces devices to use weaker signals and slower rates.

Test from several rooms after moving the router only one variable at a time. Improvements across multiple locations confirm that placement helped, while no change may indicate interference, device limits or inadequate coverage hardware.

Find the best practical location

  • Place the router in a central area and test each room.
  • Keep it away from metal shelves, mirrors and thick walls.
  • Avoid placing it next to microwaves, cordless phones or crowded electronics.
  • Check results before and after moving the router.
Testing note: The best location is usually open, elevated and near the center of use—not hidden beside the incoming cable at the edge of the building.

  • Put the router high, open and central.
  • Use mesh nodes for large or multi-floor homes.

Ask the provider about relocation options when its gateway must remain at an unsuitable entry point. For large or reinforced buildings, consider professional cabling or additional access points instead of expecting one router to cross every barrier.

Example: router at the edge of the home

The internet enters at a downstairs corner, so the router stays on the floor behind a television. Upstairs rooms connect through several walls and a concrete slab.

Running Ethernet to a central ceiling access point creates a shorter radio path. The line speed is unchanged, but coverage and jitter improve throughout the home.

  • Putting the router inside a metal cabinet or behind a large television.
  • Placing a mesh satellite in the dead zone instead of halfway toward it.
  • Keeping antennas pressed against a wall or bundled with power cables.
  • Choosing a central location without considering power, ventilation and safe cable routing.
