Improve Internet for Video Calls
Video calls need more than download speed. Your device must upload camera and microphone data while receiving video from others. Weak upload, high ping or high jitter can create freezing, echo, delayed speech and blurry video.
What a call needs from the network
If other people complain that your video freezes, upload or Wi-Fi stability is often the issue. If you hear others late or responses overlap, latency and jitter may be the cause.
For video calls, prioritize upload, ping and jitter at the desk where calls occur. A connection can have excellent download yet still freeze or delay speech when upstream capacity is busy or latency varies sharply.
Reproduce the meeting conditions
- Run a SpeedFiber test from the same room used for meetings.
- Pause backups, downloads and streaming before the call.
- Check whether problems happen only on Wi-Fi.
- Test at the same hour as your regular meetings.
Protect real-time traffic
- Use Ethernet or sit closer to the router for important calls.
- Turn off HD video if upload is limited.
- Close cloud backup and file sync while in meetings.
- Use a headset and a stable device to reduce extra processing load.
Test from the desk where calls happen and at the same time of day. Pause cloud backup, connect by Ethernet and repeat. If the call becomes stable, local Wi-Fi or upstream competition is the likely cause.
Run a call-focused test

When repeated call failure needs escalation
Contact the provider when several call services fail over a healthy wired local network and latency or packet loss remains poor at different times. Share measurements rather than only describing the call as “slow.”
Example: backup competes with a meeting
A remote worker has 200 Mbps download but only a small upstream allowance. Automatic photo backup starts during a meeting and fills the upload, causing delayed audio and a blurry camera.
Scheduling backup and enabling suitable queue management protects the call. The download headline never revealed the real bottleneck; the upload and loaded latency did.

- Testing only download speed before a two-way video meeting.
- Using a virtual background on an overloaded computer and blaming every freeze on the network.
- Joining from a weak Wi-Fi room while a better access point is available.
- Ignoring VPN routing that may add delay to corporate meetings.
