How to Improve Wi-Fi Speed
Wi-Fi speed is affected by distance, walls, interference, router quality and the number of connected devices. Many users upgrade their internet plan while the real bottleneck is the wireless network inside the home. Testing from different rooms makes the problem visible.
Why Wi-Fi loses performance
If Ethernet is fast but Wi-Fi is slow, the internet line is probably fine and the issue is local coverage or interference. If both Ethernet and Wi-Fi are slow, the problem may be the router, modem or provider line.
Measure Wi-Fi beside the router and again at the slow location using the same device. The difference between those tests shows whether placement, walls, interference or band selection matters more than the subscribed internet speed.
Measure coverage before buying equipment
- Test beside the router, then test in each important room.
- Switch between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and compare results.
- Check if old phones, cameras or smart devices are overloading the router.
- Look for thick walls, metal objects, mirrors and appliances near the router.
Improve airtime and signal quality
- Place the router high and open, away from corners and cabinets.
- Use 5 GHz for nearby devices and 2.4 GHz for longer distance.
- Add a mesh system for large homes instead of relying on one router.
- Update firmware and replace routers that cannot handle modern plans.
Measure near the router first, then at each problem location using the same device. If near-router Wi-Fi is also weak, inspect band, channel, router load and device capability. If only distant rooms are weak, solve coverage or backhaul.
Test each change separately

When the router or provider needs replacement
Ask the provider for help when its supplied router cannot support the package, restarts unexpectedly or wired service is also poor. When wired performance is healthy, indoor Wi-Fi design is usually the priority rather than the external line.
Example: a router hidden near the floor
A router sits inside a low metal cabinet at one end of the home. Devices nearby are acceptable, but the opposite bedrooms have weak signal and unstable calls.
Moving the router into an open, central and higher position improves the path through the home. A speed increase comes from better radio conditions, not a new internet plan.
Wi-Fi improvement mistakes
- Placing a repeater where it already receives a very weak signal.
- Forcing every device onto 5 GHz even in distant rooms.
- Using automatic channel settings without checking a crowded apartment environment.
- Buying a high-end router while leaving it in the same blocked corner.
