Ethernet vs Wi-Fi

Ethernet uses a cable between your device and router. Wi-Fi uses radio signal. Wi-Fi is convenient, but Ethernet is usually more stable and is the best way to check whether your internet line is actually delivering the expected speed.

Why the two links behave differently

If Ethernet is fast but Wi-Fi is slow, the line is probably not the main problem. If Ethernet is also slow, the issue may be the router, modem, service plan or provider network.

Use Ethernet as a controlled baseline and Wi-Fi as the real-world comparison. A large gap between the two results usually reveals wireless interference, distance or device limitations rather than a fault in the incoming internet service.

Run a fair wired-versus-wireless comparison

  • Run SpeedFiber on Wi-Fi, then test the same device with Ethernet.
  • Use a known good cable rated for your plan speed.
  • Check that router and device ports are gigabit for high-speed plans.
  • Compare ping and jitter, not only download speed.
Testing note: Use the same device, same server and nearly the same time. Otherwise the comparison mixes connection type with device or network changes.

Improve the weaker link

  • Use Ethernet for gaming PCs, smart TVs and work desks.
  • Use Wi-Fi for mobility and casual browsing.
  • Upgrade old Fast Ethernet cables or switches that limit speed.
  • Keep Wi-Fi for convenience but use wired testing for diagnosis.

Connect by Ethernet, turn off Wi-Fi on the device and test. Then disconnect the cable, stand near the router and test Wi-Fi. A large gap near the router may indicate radio settings, interference or client capability rather than distance alone.

Build a useful comparison test

When the line is slow on both paths

Contact the provider when Ethernet and Wi-Fi are both slow and a direct wired test with a known-good cable remains below the expected service. If Ethernet is healthy, focus first on router placement, wireless channels, mesh backhaul or client hardware.

Example: identical laptop, different connection

A laptop reaches 920 Mbps over gigabit Ethernet and 280 Mbps over Wi-Fi in the same room. The difference is expected because the wireless link has shared airtime, protocol overhead and client-radio limits.

In a distant room, Wi-Fi drops to 40 Mbps while Ethernet remains fast. A wired access point or better mesh placement addresses the room without changing the provider line.

Comparison mistakes

  • Leaving Wi-Fi enabled and accidentally testing the wireless route while a cable is connected.
  • Using a cable, switch or USB adapter limited to 100 Mbps.
  • Comparing two different devices with very different radios and processors.
  • Expecting the advertised Wi-Fi link rate to equal real application throughput.
