DNS Explained
DNS is the system that translates a website name into the IP address your device needs to connect. It is like an address book for the internet. When DNS is slow or misconfigured, websites may take longer to start loading even when your speed test looks good.
What DNS changes—and what it does not
DNS affects the beginning of a connection. It usually does not change raw download speed after a file starts, but it can make browsing feel delayed if lookups are slow or failing.
DNS problems usually affect how quickly a connection begins, not the sustained transfer rate after a website opens. Compare DNS lookup behavior with ping and download results so a slow name-resolution problem is not mistaken for weak bandwidth.
Identify a DNS-specific problem
- Use the DNS Lookup tool to check whether a domain resolves.
- Try more than one website to avoid blaming your connection for a single site issue.
- Compare browsing delay with speed test results.
- Check if VPN or security apps are changing DNS.
Improve name-resolution reliability
- Restart the router if DNS suddenly fails across all devices.
- Try trusted DNS servers if your current resolver is unreliable.
- Clear browser cache only after checking that the issue is not site-specific.
- Contact the domain owner if only one domain has missing records.
Try the same domain on another device and another network. If one domain fails everywhere, the website or its DNS records may be responsible. If many names fail only on your connection, restart the resolver path and compare a trusted DNS service.
Compare lookup behavior correctly

When to contact the domain owner or provider
Contact your provider when many unrelated domains repeatedly fail to resolve on its default DNS but work through another reputable resolver. For a domain you own, contact the DNS host when records are missing, incorrect or not propagating as expected.
Example: one website will not open
A user can open most websites, but a recently moved domain fails on the home connection. Mobile data shows the new site. The home resolver still holds an older cached answer, so raw download speed is unrelated to the failure.
Checking the current records and waiting for the previous time-to-live period resolves the mismatch. The useful evidence is the returned DNS record and resolver behavior, not a speed-test number.
DNS troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing DNS because a Wi-Fi signal is weak or download speed is low.
- Typing a full URL with a path when a lookup tool expects only a domain name.
- Expecting record changes to appear instantly despite caching and TTL values.
- Publishing private internal hostnames in public diagnostic screenshots.
DNS questions
Will a different DNS make downloads faster? It may reduce the delay before some connections begin, but it does not usually change the sustained line speed.
